Cortinarius scaurus Fr. subgenus Phlegmacium Cap 2-6cm across, convex; browny olive-green with brown spots near the margin; greasy rather than glutinous. Gills adnate; yellowish to olive-greenish. Stem 50-130 x 8-l2mm, the base bulbous sometimes only slightly; whitish or flushed greenish or violaceous; fibrous. Flesh pallid with possible hints of violet. Odor not distinctive. Taste slight. Spores almond-shaped, rough, 9.5-11.5 x 6-6.5µ, quotient 1.7. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in conifer woods, usually with sphagnum moss, often at high altitudes. Found in Europe and the Pacific Northwest and New York. Season August-October. Not edible.
